Relate has run a successful psychosexual therapy programme over several years and has an established training department with clear policies, procedures, and processes for the effective management of student training experiences and clinical placements.
The course aims to train qualified relationship therapists in psychosexual therapy so that they are competent to practice in this specialism. This will include core knowledge of sexual difficulties, their aetiology and impact on relationship functioning, and appropriate treatment approaches within the scope of psychosexual therapy including when referral to other professionals may be needed.
Building on students existing clinical skills in forming therapeutic relationships, the course will orientate students to CBT practice principles and how these are applied to work with sexual difficulties as well as exploring the integration of their existing knowledge of relationship work. Evidence based practice will form a key focus of the course where students will engage with classic texts, contemporary literature, and research papers to inform their practice. Working with relationship diversity will be a core component of each module of study as well as receiving specific attention on one focused module to develop and consolidate students understanding of anti-oppressive practice.
